Kats roll past UIW in three Thursday

Led by senior Deveney Wells-Gibson and freshman Jordyn Vaughn, Sam Houston State took only an hour and seventeen minutes to dispatch Incarnate Word in three sets Thursday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

The Sam Houston volleyball team rolled through the Cardinals 25-14 25-16 25-12. Wells-Gibson totaled 13 kills and Vaughn added 12 to lead the Kat offense.

“We played well in all phases of the game,” head coach Brenda Gray said. “Our serving was spot on and that helped a lot. We got some great production from our outside hitters.”

The Bearkats totaled 42 kills in 109 attempts with only 18 errors. UIW managed only 21 kills.

Three Sam Houston players totaled double figure digs with Wells-Gibson leading the defense with 13. Setter Michelle Griffith totaled 12 digs and 36 assists. Breanna Homer produced 11 digs and had four kills.

Sam Houston also posted 12 blocks as a team with Shelby Genung having a hand in five. Libero Claire Kilpatrick totaled nine digs.

The Bearkats only trailed four times in any of the sets, twice early in the first and twice more in the opening moments of the third set. Sam Houston was playing in its first home match since August 30.

“It really meant a lot to be home. There really is no place like home,” Gray said.

Sam Houston upped its record to 10-7 for the season and 3-1 in Southland Conference play. The Cardinals fell to 5-13 for the year and 1-4 in league action.

The Bearkats play host to Abilene Christian Saturday at 11 a.m.
