Led by Ashley Phelps who totaled 14 kills with only one error in 34 attempts, A&M-Corpus Christi rolled to a three-set victory over Sam Houston in the next-to-last regular season volleyball match for both teams Thursday in Corpus Christi.
Errors hurt the Bearkats as the Islanders won 25-19 25-18 25-17.
A&M-Corpus Christi totaled 44 kills to 35 for the Kats. But the SHSU women were credited with 33 errors (22 on attack attempts, three serving, four reception errors and four net errors) while the Islanders had only 18.
Sam Houston still can nail down third place all alone in the 2014 Southland regular season with a victory Saturday in the regular season finale at Houston Baptist. The Islanders finish league play with a home match with Lamar.
The Bearkats stand 18-10 for the year and 11-4 in league action. The Islanders are one match back with a 10-5 Southland mark and a 17-15 record for the year. The two teams split this year with the Kats winning last week in three sets in Huntsville.
Deveney Wells-Gibson led both teams with 15 kills. Michelle Griffith totaled 32 assists and Claire Kilpatrick led the defense with 18 digs. Jordyn Vaughn added eight kills.
Each of the three sets were close early before A&M-Corpus Christi went on big runs and never trailed again. The scores were tied twice in the first set, five times in the second and six in the third.
In the opening set, six Bearkat errors accounted for points in an 8-2 run by their oppoents that gave the Islanders a 10-4 lead. A&M-Corpus Christi eventually led by 10 points, 20-10, before taking the first stanza 25-19.
A kill by Vaughn put Sam Houston up 11-9 in the second set. But the Islanders got hot again, taking a two sets to none lead into the break with a 14-8 run to win the second 25-18.
The story was the same in the third as the SHSU women led 6-5 before the Islanders broke away with a 10-2 run to go up 15-8. A&M-Corpus Christi won 10 of the next 19 points to pick up the win.
