SHSU women third at UMES Hawk Classic

Sam Houston's No. 3 ranked women's bowling team posted victories over No. 11 Sacred Heart and No. 5 Maryland-Eastern Shore to finish third in the Hawk Classic Sunday in Millsboro, Delaware.
The Bearkats completed the tournament with an 11-4 dual match record in their fourth women's intercollegiate event of the season. Thirteen of the 18 squads in the tournament field entered nationally ranked. Nine of SHSU's 11 wins came over Top 20 opponents.
The defending NCAA Division I national championship team's performance in Delaware runs their season record to 41 victories and only 15 defeats for the fall. The SHSU women now own a record of 25-11 against teams in the Top 20.
The Bearkats have finished among the top three teams in three of their four tournaments including a tournament championship at Tulane.
Sunday, the Kats opened play with a 4-1 victory over Sacred Heart. The SHSU women lost the first game 244-178 but bounced back to sweep the next four 196-171, 223-169, 197-184 and 246-202.
Fairleigh Dickinson, the eventual tournament champion, knocked off the Bearkats 4-1 in the semifinals. Sam Houston started strong with a 195-155 win but fell in the next four games 191-181, 193-182, 217-170 and 222-147.
The pattern continued in the third-place matchup, this time with Sam Houston winning in five games over the tournament host Hawks of UMES 168-179, 176-166, 246-215, 191-182, 203-171.
FDU defeated Vanderbilt in the tournament championship match. Following Sam Houston and UMES in the standings after bracket play were Saint Francis (Penn) in fifth, Sacred Heart sixth, Stephen F. Austin seventh, North Carolina A&T eighth, Delaware State ninth, Long Island 10th, Kutztown 11th and Saint Francis Brooklyn 12th.
Sam Houston won four of its six traditional team matches Saturday.
Fairleigh Dickinson opened the day with a 981-973 win over the No. 3 ranked Bearkats. Sam Houston bounced back for a 948-938 victory over No. 13 North Carolina A&T and a 913-913 tie with No. 10 Saint Francis (Penn) in which the Kats took the tiebreaker.
After a 998-955 loss to No. 5 Maryland-Eastern Shore, the SHSU women knocked off unranked Adelphi 966-907 and No. 12 Kutztown 940-928.
Janine Kuwahara, Anna Groce and Heather Penatzer led the Bearkats in total pin fall during traditional team action. Kuwahara posted a 245 in the first match of the day and ended with 1,202 pins. Penatzer had a high game of 211 and Groce produced a best of 202.
Sam Houston rolled to a 5-1 record on the first day of the Hawk Classic bowling tournament in Millsboro, Delaware.
The defeated No. 4 Vanderbilt 1042-964, No. 7 Fairleigh Dickinson 1001-999, No. 11 Sacred Heart 926-890 and No. 14 Long Island 1024-946 in quad baker action Friday at the Millsboro Lanes.
The SHSU women's only loss came to No. 17 Saint Francis of Brooklyn 956-918 in the Kats' third match of the day.
