
Women Are Third in Southland Race

Led by Ana Moreno and Olivia Olguin, the Sam Houston women's cross country team finished third in the Southland Conference Championships Monday morning in Natchitoches, La.
The performance marks only the fourth time the Bearkats have placed among the league's top three cross country squads.
The 6,000 meter race was held at the Northwestern State Golf Course.
Moreno placed ninth individually with a time of 21:13 while Olguin was 11th boasting a time of 21:27.
Other Sam Houston finishes and times included Nicole Aponte 23rd (22:03), Miranda Prado 29th (22:20), Nina Gonzales 34th (22:53) and Briana McCall 61st (24:05).
Lamar won the women's title, scoring 20 points with runners finishing first, second and third. Stephen F. Austin was the runner-up with 50 points. Sam Houston placed third with 106 points.
McNeese State and Abilene Christian tied for fourth with 122 points followed by Incarnate Word (160), A&M-Corpus Christi (203), Houston Baptist (211), Southeastern Louisiana (247), Northwestern State (286), Central Arkansas (288) and Nicholls (309).
Only twice in Sam Houston's 27 years in the Southland Conference has a Bearkat women's team finished higher than the 2014 team. The Kats were runners-up in 2000 and 2012. The SHSU women's other third place finish in cross country came in 1991.
Minttu Hukka of Lamar was the Southland women's individual champion with a time of 20:06.
