
Wells-Gibson & Kilpatrick earn SLC honors

Sam Houston State senior outside hitter Deveney Wells-Gibson earned Southland Conference women's volleyball offensive player of the week honors, while sophomore libero Claire Kilpatrick was selected Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The awards came after the Bearkats racked up home victories over Houston Baptist and A&M-Corpus Christi last Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Both the Huskies and the Islanders came into Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in third place in the Southland standings. HBU fell to the SHSU women in four sets and A&M-Corpus Christi in three.
Wells-Gibson extended her streak of matches with double-figure kills to 11 with 22 kills in Thursday's match against Houston Baptist and 24 kills vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday.
The San Antonio, Texas (Churchill H.S.), native has now posted double figure kills in 21 of 24 matches this season and has recorded 20 or more kills in 11 different matches.
Averaging her highest weekly total this season of 6.57 kills per set this week, Wells-Gibson added three blocks and 19 digs across the two matches.
Wells-Gibson ranks in the top-15 nationally in attacks per set, total attacks, points per set, kills per set and total kills.
This is the fourth time this year Wells-Gibson has been named Southland Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, she was also named for the weekly award on Sept. 1, Sept. 22, and Oct. 6.
Kilpatrick led the Bearkats in digs as Sam Houston State defeated Houston Baptist 3-1 Thursday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 3-0 Saturday.
The Arlington, Texas (Martin H.S.), native averaged 5.6 digs per set for the two matches as she recorded 39 digs. Kilpatrick led the Bearkats' defense as they held opponents to a .161 hitting percentage on the week, holding Houston Baptist to .183 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to .132.
This is the second time this season Kilpatrick has earned defensive player of the week honors; she also was named for the weekly award on Oct. 20.
Sam Houston plays host to Northwestern State Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the third contest in a current five-match home stand for the Bearkats.
