Bearkat Trio Named Academic All-Southland

Deveney Wells-Gibson, Michelle Griffith and Carling Urben of Sam Houston State have been named to the 2014 Academic All-Southland Conference volleyball squad.
Wells-Gibson and Griffith are first team selections and Urben is a second team honoree.
A general business major with a 3.67 overall grade point average, Wells-Gibson is only the second Bearkat in 28 years in the league to earn first team All-Southland honors three years in a row.
The senior from San Antonio led the Southland in total kills this fall, posting a 4.79 kills per set average. She totaled double figure kills in 27 of 30 matches this year. She was a four-time Southland “Offensive Player of the Week” selection and named all-tournament at regular season events twice.
Griffith, a food science major with a 3.71 overall GPA, earned All-Southland honors after leading the league in assists this year. The setter from Sugar Land averaged 10.28 assists and 2.57 digs per set. Both Wells-Gibson and Griffith started all 30 matches for the Bearkats.
An animal science major from Jarrell, Texas, Urben holds a 3.98 overall GPA. She ranked second in kills and points for the 2014 Bearkats, playing in 28 matches.
