Huntsville – Jabari Peters scored 16 points to lead Sam Houston to a 76-52 victory over Eastern Washington Tuesday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Five Bearkats scored in double figures as the SHSU men upped their season record to 6-4 and remained unbeaten (4-0) on their home floor.
Tyler Harvey led both teams with 26 points. Harvey went 8-for-10 from the floor including five three-pointers. The Eagles dropped to 8-3 for the year.
Sam Houston shot 46.2 per cent from the field (24-of-52) including 13 treys. DeMarcus Gatlin scored 14 points and Kaheem Ransom added 13.
Michael Holyfield, Sam Houston's 6-11 senior center, led both teams with eight rebound, scored 10 points and had four blocks. The Bearkats out-rebounded EWU 40-29.
“Tonight went great,” Sam Houston head coach Jason Hooten said. “It played out just like I wanted it to. We shot the ball and made shots. We guarded like we've guarded all season.”
Eastern Washington got off to a quick start with a 17-7 lead eight minutes into the contest.
The Bearkats started finding the basket, going on a 16-3 run during the next five minutes to take the lead, 23-20, on a trey by Ransom with 7:11 left in the first period.
EWU tied the game twice more before Sam Houston finished the final six minutes of the half with a 17-6 run. The Bearkats took a 42-31 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The SHSU men never trailed in the second half, leading by 28 points with less than two minutes to play before clearing their bench.
“We played with a lot of energy tonight,” Hooten said, “They were tired. Eastern Washington played at Washington Sunday night then caught a red-eye flight to Houston. But I give our guys a lot of credit. I think we had a lot to do with it. In the second half we were just unbelievable.”
Dakarai Henderson was the fifth Bearkat in double figures with 11 points.
Sam Houston State returns to action Saturday at 4:30 p.m. playing host to Texas-Pan American.
