For the third time in the past four years and the fifth time in program history, Sam Houston will be playing in the FCS quarterfinals this Saturday at Villanova.
The Wildcats are the No. 6 seed in the plays. They received a bye in the opening round and last week defeated Liberty 29-22 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Tickets for the Sam Houston vs. Villanova game in Pennsylvania are now on sale through the Wildcat ticket office. Sections NA and NG are the Bearkats' seating area behind the SHSU bench.
Fans may call the Villanova Athletic Ticket Office at 610-519-4100 or purchase playoff tickets online.
Kickoff Saturday is at 12 noon Central Time (1 p.m. Eastern). The game will be telecast live on ESPN3 and broadcast in the Walker County area on KSAM 101.7 FM radio.
Sam Houston already has defeated two top 10 ranked opponents to advance in FCS post-season play. The Bearkats knocked off No. 9 Southeastern Louisiana 21-17 in Huntsville and beat No. 3 Jacksonville State 37-26 last Saturday in Alabama.
Saturday's game is one of four quarterfinal match-ups in the FCS playoffs this weekend.
In the top half of the draw, No. 1 seed New Hampshire hosts No. 8 Chattanooga on Friday at 7 p.m. Central and No. 4 Eastern Washington meets No. 5 Illinois State on Saturday at 3 p.m. Central in Cheney, Washington.
The Sam Houston-Villanova winner will face the victor of the bout matching No. 7 Coastal Carolina with No. 2 seed North Dakota State in the Fargo Dome Saturday at 11 a.m. Central.
The 10-4 Bearkats are the only FCS first round participant that have battled their way into the quarterfinals.
Villanova, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), brings an 11-2 record into Saturday's contest. The Wildcats' only losses – both by just one point – were to Syracuse 27-26 in two overtimes and to Richmond 10-9. Villanova was the runner-up to No. 1 New Hampshire in the CAA final standings with a 7-1 league mark.
Quarterback John Robertson, the CAA “Offensive Player of the Year”, leads the Nova offense.
Andy Talley, the Wildcats head coach, owns a 215-127-1 record in his 30 seasons at Villanova. The Wildcats are making their 11th appearance in FCS post-season play. Villanova defeated Montana in the championship finals in 2009.
