When Stephen F. Austin visits Sam Houston State in the hardwood version of the Battle of the Piney Woods Saturday at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, the match-up will pit the Southand's No. 1 Lumberjacks against the league's No. 2 Bearkats.
SFA is 12-0 in league play after beating Lamar 78-69 on Thursday for its 20th consecutive victory. Sam Houston sits two games behind SFA and is 10-2 in conference games after winnings its fifth consecutive games Thursday against Northwestern State to snap the Demons' six-game win streak.
SFA is 23-2 overall compared to Sam Houston, which is 18-6.
ESPN3 will broadcast the doubleheader between Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State. Action begins with the women's game at 1:30 p.m.Lincoln Rose and Jim Haller will have the call.
Stephen F. Austin had already qualified for the 2014 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament and was joined in the field Thursday by Sam Houston State at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bearkats defeated Northwestern State 67-64 to qualify for the tournament for the 12th consecutive season.
SFA is led by senior Desmond Haymon whose 30-points against Lamar helped him topped the 1,000-point plateau on Thursday night. Haymond became the first Lumberjack to accomplish the feat since 2011.
Sam Houston has won nine of their last ten games. Jabari Peters continues to lead Sam Houston in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game. Kaheem Ransom (11.6) is also scoring in double figures.
Michael Holyfield is the team's top rebounder. He is averaging 6.4 rebounds to rank 10th in the Southland.
The Sam Houston women jumped back into the fight for a berth in the Southland Conference tournament in Katy Thursday with a come-from-behind win over the Northwestern State Demons.
Angela Beadle (15.7 points, 10.4 rebounds per game) continues to lead Sam Houston. Jasmine Johnson (11.6) and Amanda Barnes (6.7) add scoring punch in the backcourt.
Between games, the 1973 Sam Houston men's basketball team that was voted as AP Small College National Champions at the end of the regular season will be honored.
