After leading all scorers with 14 first-half points, Angela Beadle was shut out in the second half and the Sam Houston women's basketball team lost 58-52 to Stephen F. Austin Saturday at Johnson Coliseum.
Beadle put on a show in the first half, scoring the first four points of the game and then scoring a layup just before the halftime buzzer to give SHSU a 31-29 lead at the break.
Sam Houston went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal in the second half and had just one made basket in the first 11:28 of the second period. A jumper by Jasmine Johnson and a three-pointer by Summer Fife ended the scoreless drought and made it just a three point game.
The Kats kept it close down the stretch but a three-pointer by SFA's Brentney Branch with 1:24 left in the game provided the dagger.
Jasmine Johnson and Amanda Barnes were the only other Bearkat players to score in double figures. Johnson added 16 points and Barnes scored 15. Barnes, Beadle and Johnson were the only three SHSU players to score in the first half.
Summer Fife and Nyha Carter scored the only other points for Sam Houston. Fife had five points and Carter scored a layup in the final minute for her only points.
The Lumberjacks had three players score in double figures. Taylor Ross led the way with 16 points while Porsha Roberts and Daylyn Harris each scored 14 points.
Sam Houston hits the road for a three-game stretch against Lamar, Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas. The Kats return to Johnson Coliseum Thursday, March 6 against Southeastern Louisiana.
