For the second time in two days, Nebraska pitcher Emily Lockman kept the Bearkat bats relatively quiet as the Huskers defeated Sam Houston 7-1 in both team's final action in the UH Cougar Classic softball tournament Sunday.
Lockman (4-1) allowed only two hits in six innings as Nebraska upped its season record to 7-2. Sam Houston dropped to 1-5 for the year, but the Bearkats picked up valuable experience against top teams in their first week of action.
The Bearkats' two hits resulted in a run in the bottom of the third inning as Alyssa Coggins led off with a triple and scored on a single by Tayler Gray.
Nebraska got on the board in the top of the second on a pair of unearned runs. The Huskers pulled away with two-run home runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Shelby Lancaster (0-2) took the loss, pitching five-and-two-thirds inning. Freshman Tayler Atkinson pitched in relief.
Gray led the Bearkats at the plate in the tournament, going 6-for-16 (.375 average) including a double, two home runs and four RBIs. Hillary Adams and Tiffany Castillo both produced four hits apiece in the event.
Atkinson pitched in four of Sam Houston's five games, earning the victory in the Bearkats' win over Stephen F. Austin. The freshman allowed nine hits in eight innings and struck out four.
Next action for the Bearkats is a trip to the North Texas Mean Green Classic in Denton Friday through Sunday. The Kats will begin play against Stephen F. Austin Friday at 9 a.m.
