League race heating up with Saturday action

This week's Southland Conference men's and women's basketball schedule is a bit like the calm before the storm.
It's the lightest week of the season with just one Thursday game on the docket (Southeastern Louisiana at New Orleans).
There are six games on the scheduled for Saturday, including five conference doubleheaders. Those games are all against travel partners with McNeese State visiting Nicholls, Oral Roberts visiting Central Arkansas, Northwestern State at Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State at Lamar and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Houston Baptist.
In the men's race, Sam Houston is one of three teams that have already locked up a berth in the post-season tournament in Katy. Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are the other two.
But more important goals still are yet to be achieved.
Each of the top four finishers in the final standings earn a bye into the quarterfinals and the regular season champion and runner-up automatic move to the semifinals.
The Sam Houston women are still in the hunt for a tournament berth. Standing ninth in the league standings now with a 6-7 Southland mark, the Bearkat women are one of six teams with either six or seven wins that are vying for the final three spots.
The Kats face two of those teams (Southeastern Louisiana and Oral Roberts) in their final five games.
Sam Houston travels to Beaumont to meet Lamar in a doubleheader Saturday. The women play at 4 p.m. and the men at 6:15 p.m.
The contests will be broadcast live in Huntsville with the women's game airing on KHVL 104.9 FM and the men's on KSAM 101.7 FM.
All-session tickets for the 2014 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament March 12-16 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy are now on sale.
Seats in the Sam Houston section for the tournament are available now online at Southland Tournament Tickets. Reserved all-tournament booklets sell for $75 each, while general admission all-tournament booklets are available for $60.
