Sam Houston's bats exploded for 23 hits and 22 runs Saturday as the Bearkat softball team defeated Abilene Christian 6-1 and Prairie View A&M 16-6 on the second day of the North Texas Shootout tournament in Denton.
Tayler Gray went 5-for-7 at the plate with 5 RBIs to lead the Bearkats at the plate Saturday. Tori Koerselman was 4-for-7 with 3 RBIs. Hillary Adams blasted two home runs and Gray and Tiffany Castillo each added another.
Home runs accounted for four of Sam Houston's six runs in the victory over Abilene Christian.
Gray hit a solo shot in the first inning and Castillo and Adams each hit home runs in the third. Cecilia Castillo added another run with an RBI double and Jessica Slater scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.
Meme Quinn was the winning pitcher for SHSU, throwing the Bearkats third complete game of the season. She gave up seven hits and struck out three of the 28 batters she faced.
Adams' three-run homer in the second game highlighted a 12-hit performance by Sam Houston.
Tayler Atkinson picked up the victory in the circle, spreading five hits over five-and-two thirds innings. Haley Baros closed out the game.
Sam Houston concludes action in the tournament Sunday. The Bearkats will play Stephen F. Austin at 9 a.m.
