Kats Finish Day One of SLC Championships Strong

The Sam Houston State men's track and field squad completed its first day of competition at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships and will focus on continual improvement heading into the finals in Birmingham, Ala. on Thursday.
“We'd like to be a little bit further up than we are,” head coach David Self said. “It's going to be tough to make those things up but we can. Good things and bad things always happen [during day one], it's a matter of how you handle them. Despite a couple mistakes, we feel confident.”
The Bearkats made two podium appearances on Wednesday, courtesy of two late, yet extremely important finishes. In the men's 5000m run, senior Palo Ponce put forth a performance to remember taking third and a time of 14:58.80
“He's always kind of been on the cusp of doing some big stuff,” Self said. “We had Palo getting third in the 5k, which we haven't scored in a distance event in a long time. Having him come through and run sub-15 minutes, that's huge.”
The men would add on to their momentum swing in the day's last event thanks to a third place distance medley relay finish and time of 10:09.57 from Lucio Rosas, Matthew Viverette, De'Quad Binder and Karl Schreiber.
Elsewhere, Viverette captured a first place finish in the 60m hurdles with a qualifying time of 8.20 and will be joined in the finals by teammate Jay Roberson who secured a seventh place finish and mark of 8.46.
In the 60m dash, Jarrick Wright qualified for action on Thursday with a time of 6.87 and sixth place finish.
Rodney Jones would also make his mark in the first day of competition at the CrossPlex placing first in the 400m dash (47.69) and fifth in the 200m dash (21.65), good enough to compete in the finals for both events.
Alex Gilreath will join his teammate Jones in the finals of the 400m dash thanks in part to a time of 48.91 and a sixth place finish.
De'Quad Binder would also play a pivotal part in the Bearkats success producing a third place finish and mark of 1:57.25 in the 800m run earning his place in Thursday's finals.
Action will begin on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. from the Birmingham CrossPlex and conclude at 5 p.m. as the Bearkats look to end their indoor season on a high note.
