Dakarai Henderson scored 13 points and Marquel McKinney and Terrance Motley each added 11 points to lead Sam Houston in an 84-70 Southland Conference men's basketball victory over Lamar Saturday afternoon.
The Bearkats, winners of eight of their last nine games, stand all alone in second place in the Southland Conference with a 9-2 league record. Sam Houston is 17-6 for the year. The Kats play host to first place Stephen F. Austin next Saturday.
Rhon Mitchell and Donovan Ross led Lamar (5-18, SLC 2-9) with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Motley led the Bearkats on the boards with 12 rebounds.
Lamar led only once by one point in the first half nine minutes into the game. Sam Houston took a 48-27 lead into the dressing room at intermission.
The Kats' largest lead was 24 points , 51-27 with 19:09 to play, as the Sam Houston men spread out the scoring. Twelve of the 13 players on the roster scored. Paul Baxter added eight points and five assists. Kaheem Ransom tallied five points and assisted on six other baskets.
Sam Houston shot 54.8 per cent in the first half (17-of-31) and 48.2 per cent for the contest (27-of-56). The Kats out-boarded the Cardinals 35-28.
The SHSU men face two important games next week, playing host to Northwestern State on Thursday and SFA on Sautrday.
