Kats continue rise in rankings

Sam Houston State has risen to No. 16 in the latest Baseball America Poll, up two spots from last week's highest ever ranking. The Bearkats (16-4) also jumped into the Collegiate Baseball Poll for the first time this season, debuting at No. 25.
The Kats also appear at No. 19 in the PerfectGame.org Poll and No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll this week.
SHSU opened Southland play with a three-game sweep of New Orleans on the road. Senior catcher Anthony Azar blasted three home runs and drove in 10 runs to lead the Bearkats. Center fielder Colt Atwood also had a great week, batting .474 with seven RBI and five runs scored.
Two weeks ago marked the earliest in the season that the Kats had ever appeared in the Division I national rankings.
With Collegiate Baseball and the Coaches Polls both adding the Kats, it marks the first time since 2012 that Sam Houston State is ranked in every poll.
The Bearkats will head next to Texas-Arlington for a single game Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. and will continue the road trip at Central Arkansas this weekend.
