Coach & Freshman of Year Honors Go To Bearkats

Sam Houston track and field head coach Dave Self has been named as Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year after directing the Bearkats to the 2014 indoor women's team championship last weekend.
The Bearkats' Jay Roberson was voted as Southland men's indoor track and field freshman of the year.
Roberson, a Frankston, Texas (Robert E. Lee H.S.), native, accounted for 12 points for Sam Houston after finishing fourth in the heptathlon (4,820 points), fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.34) and sixth in the pole vault (15-01). He is the first Bearkat to win the award.
The honor for Self marks the second time he has been voted Southland indoor track and field coach of the year honors. This is the first time for him to receive the honor as a head coach as the SHSU earned their third league indoor title and the first since 2008.
In 2008 Self was named the Southland Conference indoor coach of the year, becoming the first assistant coach in the conference to earn the award.
The top-three finishers in each event earned All-Southland Conference honors. The winner earned first-team honors, the second place finisher earned second-team recognition while third place finishers are honored with third-team awards.
Sam Houston women earned All-Southland honors in six events. The Bearkat men received All-Southland selection in 10 events.
Sabrina Starr (60m hurdles), Lygia Foreman (400m dash), Katelyn Wynn (pole vault) and the relay team of Jordan Grady, Sunday Foster, Ruth Amaku and Foreman (4x400) were first team All-Southland honorees for the women.
Matthew Viverette (60m hurdles), Rodney Jones (400m dash) and De'Quad Binder (800m run) were first team selections for the men.
Second team honorees were Danielle Demas (women's 60m hurdles), Briana McCall (women's 800m run), Kara Whitson (women's pole vault), Viverette, Alex Gilreath, Binder and Jones (men's 4x400m relay) and Charles White (men's triple jump) earned second team All-Southland.
Lucio Rosas, Viverette, Binder and Karl Schreiber (men's distance medley), Jones (200m dash), Palo Ponce (5,000m run) and Brek Christensen (men's weight throw) were third team honorees.
