Bearkats Enter Outdoor Finals In Third

Heading into the final day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships, the Sam Houston men's track & field squad has placed itself in third place amongst 13 teams after tallying 34 points at the Bill Stephens Track & Field Complex in Conway, Ark.
"This is where you really start focusing on those individual performances," head coach David Self said. "The better those performances are, the better the team performance is. That's the great thing about it."
In the decathlon pole vault, Jay Roberson put on a show besting all competitors and capturing a height of 17 feet, ¾ inches. The freshman nearly joined unique company including Bearkat Shane Stewart who holds the Southland record in the event at 17 feet, 6 inches (1999).
After finishing day one's decathlon events in eighth, Roberson would surge all the up to a tie for third before eventually finishing the event in sixth place with 6,435 points.
"Day two is always my day," Roberson said. "I PR'd in the discus and the pole vault like I wanted to. I didn't vault very well last night and I knew I was 48th in our Region so I knew to make Regionals I needed to make the 17 ft. bar."
In the long jump, senior Charles White secured five points for Sam Houston in a fourth place finisher and distance of 24 feet, 1 ¾ inches. Freshman teammate Simon Imagbe would come in 17th with a distance of 21 feet, 3 ½ inches at his inaugural outdoor championships.
Rodney Jones punched his ticket to tomorrow's finals after racing a time of 47.29 in the 400-meter dash in a first place finish in both his heat and overall. The junior is the reigning champion in the event after taking the top spot at the indoor championships in Birmingham, Ala.
In the 100-meter dash, Justin Jenkins will represent SHSU in tomorrow's finals after a personal best time of 10.49 in a sixth place overall finisher while in the 800 meters, De'Quad Binder captured third place and a qualifying time of 1:54.36.
The Bearkats also solidified a big day in the 200-meter dash led by Rodney Jones (20.96) who took third overall in the preliminaries to qualify for tomorrow. The junior's mark was a personal-best adding on to what has been a storied SHSU career.
Senior Brek Christensen took fourth in the discus throw finals behind a throw of 160 feet, 10 inches and freshman teammate James Endsley brought home seventh with a distance of 153 feet, 8 inches.
The 3,000-meter steeplechase closed out the day for Sam Houston with all the Bearkats taking home PR's including junior Karl Schreiber in fifth (9:31.09) followed by Logan Terry in seventh (9:33.24) and Evan Arambula in eighth (9:34.71).
The Kats will look to make a surge in the final day of the Outdoor Championships tomorrow. The shot put will kick off the day's events at 10 a.m. followed by the running finals at 2 p.m. Fans can follow along on the Southland Conference website or at Twitter.com/BearkatSports.
