Sam Houston State sophomore shortstop Corey Toups has been named the Southland Hitter of the Week, the league office announced Sunday.
Toups was an integral part in helping the Bearkats sweep Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and claim their third consecutive regular-season league title.
The sophomore from The Woodlands, Texas (College Park), went 3-for-3 in the series opener with a home run, double and three RBI. In the second game of the series, Toups added two more hits and drove in two more runs to help Sam Houston to the 13-3 win. In the series finales, Toups had his 12-game hitting streak snapped, but drew two walks, scored a run and knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.
The Kats outscored the Islanders 31-6 in the series.
Toups and the Bearkats head into this week's conference tournament as the top seed and will play eighth-seeded Lamar at noon Wednesday, May 21.
