
Two Bearkats Advance To NCAA West Quarters

NCAA WEST PRELIMINARY LIVE RESULTS
Rodney Jones and De'Quad Binder advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Thursday.
Jones posted a 46.46 clocking in the 400 meters dash with a 12th place finish in the prelims.
De'Quad placed 16th in the 800 meter prelims with a time of 1:50.09. Both will compete in the quarterfinals of their events Friday night. The 400 meters will be contested at 6 p.m. and the 800 meters at 7 p.m.
The qualifiers out of the West region will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
In order to advance to the finals in Oregon, competitors must finish among the top 12 in their individual event.
Jones came into the NCAA West competition with the nation's 15th fastest 400 meters (46.31). Binder ranked 33rd nationally in the 800 meters.
Justin Jenkins missed moving on to the quarterfinals in the 100 meter dash by only three-one hundreds of a second. Jenkins placed 27th in the prelims with a time of 10.58. The Bearkats' Jarrick Wright was 47th in the 100 meters with a 10.89 mark.
Lygia Foreman, women's co-high point scorer at the Southland Conference meet, placed 39th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 54.96. The last runner to qualify for the quarterfinals posted a 53.52 mark.
Charles White missed advancing to the final 16 in the long jump by four inches. White placed 19th with a mark of 23' 11.75”.
Jay Roberson, who came into the meet ranked 41st nationally in the pole vault with his mark of 16' 1.75” at the Southland Conference championships in Conway, no-heighted in the first round, aiming at a mark of 16' 3.25”.
Southland women's pole vault champion Kara Whitson cleared the bar at 12' 3.25” on her second attempt but missed in all three tries at 12' 9”.
Sam Houston action in Friday's prelims includes Sabrina Starr and Danielle Demas in the 100 meter hurdles; Kaylynne Wright in the triple jump and Brek Christensen in the hammer throw.
Since the NCAA preliminary rounds were instituted in 2010, three Bearkats have advanced to the finals through preliminary competition.
Chris Cralle won the West preliminary hammer throw in 2011 and went on to earn All-America honors with a seventh place national finish.
Last year, White advanced to the finals with a 12th place finish in the triple jump. He finished 22nd at the national finals.
The SHSU 4x400 relays of Trey Jones, Brian Hellaire, Jesse Martinez and D. J. Hayes finished 10th in the West and placed 20th at the national finals.
