Kats In Third At Outdoor Championships

The Sam Houston men's track & field program kicked off action at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships from a rainy Conway, Ark. on Friday totaling 12 points in third place.
As it stands following day one, Stephen F. Austin leads with 42 points followed by Southeastern Louisiana in second (23) and the Bearkats in third at 12.
Freshman Jay Roberson was in dual action tallying 3,272 points, earning 8th place in the decathlon while capturing a height of 16 feet, 1 ¾ inches for fifth place in the pole vault.
“He's a little bit better the second day,” head coach David Self said of Roberson. “We think that he can move up and do some good things. He can finish higher.”
Roberson was followed by teammate Garrett Rose in eighth place and a vault of 15 feet, 1 ¾ inches.
“I'd say it was a pretty good day,” Roberson said. “I had some good marks; some things went wrong but overall I think I'm where I need to be. Tomorrow is going to be a big day.”
Four events remain tomorrow in the decathlon highlighted by the 100-meter hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter dash.
In the hammer throw, senior Brek Christensen and junior Ammaad McCarthy finished in fifth and ninth place respectively with tosses of 186 feet, 10 inches and 169 feet, 10 inches.
The men finished out the day in the 10,000-meter run as Daniel Jones took sixth place (31:45.41), Ryan Saam captured ninth (32:13.59) and Palo Ponce brought home tenth (32:32.92).
“The biggest deal is you have to come in and compete,” Self said. “We're going to have the same weather tomorrow so you can't let it affect you. For a vast majority of the guys, it's prelims day. Rule number one is make the finals and put yourself in a position to score on Sunday.”
Action will pick up Saturday with the decathlon events at 10 a.m. followed by the field events at 3 p.m. and running preliminaries at 5 o'clock. Fans can follow all of the Outdoor Championships live on the Southland Conference website or at Twitter.com/BearkatSports.
