A 58th-minute goal by Baylor's Alexa Wilde gave the Bears a 1-0 win over Sam Houston State in an exhibition contest in Waco. The Bearkats will play Houston, Sun. at 7 p.m. in their final tune-up for the regular season.
The Kats got the opportunity to play 22 different players, including all four of the newcomers. Caitlyn Schwartz was the only newcomer to start the game.
“I thought we did a good job of handling the pressure from one of the top programs in the Big 12 and an NCAA Tournament team,” Bearkat head coach Tom Brown said. “We created a few chances but could not come away with a goal. We will review the film and start working on the areas that Baylor hurt us. I think we are in a good place for being in camp for one week.”
Junior goalkeeper Kylie Hambleton started the first half and made a pair of saves. Senior Magen Ross played the second half and also made two saves but gave up the goal.
Sam Houston totaled five shots, forcing three saves from the Baylor goalkeepers. The Bears had nine shots in the game.
The game-winning goal came off of a free kick taken by Katie Daigle.
The Bearkats open the regular season at home against Louisiana-Lafayette Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. SHSU is also home Sunday night against Texas-San Antonio at 6:30 p.m.
