Kats tabbed third in preseason soccer poll
8/14/2014 10:57:00 AM | Soccer
The Sam Houston State women's soccer team has been picked to finish third in the Southland by the league's coaches and fourth in the sports information director's poll. A third place finish would be the best in program history.
Stephen F. Austin was tabbed to claim a fourth consecutive regular season title after the Ladyjacks went 10-1-1 in league play last season. Southeastern Louisiana was picked second in both polls while Nicholls was selected to finish ahead of SHSU in the SID poll.
Last season the Bearkats finished sixth but earned the fifth seed in the Southland Conference Tournament. Sam Houston beat Nicholls 1-0 to advance to the semifinals where top seed SFA came from behind to defeat the Kats 2-1.
Sam Houston's best league finish came in head coach Tom Brown's second season (2009) when the Kats finished in fourth place with a 5-4 league record.
The Bearkats open the regular season at home against Louisiana-Lafayette Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. SHSU is also home that Sunday night against Texas-San Antonio at 6:30 p.m.
