Alabama State next for Bearkats Saturday

Next up for Sam Houston is Alabama State Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
The game with the Hornets will be the home opener for the Bearkats at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium. Saturday is “Orange Out 2014” at Bowers.
Sam Houston fell to No. 1 Eastern Washington 56-35 Saturday in the season opener. All-America quarterback Vernon Adams lived up to his preseason billing at the favorite to win the 2014 Walter Payton Award as the nation's top FCS offensive player.
The junior passed for 302 yards and four touchdowns and gained 61 more yards on the ground. The Eagles ended the day with 100 plays for 624 total yards.
“Adams is really special,” SHSU head coach K. C. Keeler said. “He's a young man that made a lot of big throws. He really did. But he got himself out of a lot of really big trouble, too. He's legitimately the best player at this level and we saw his A-game today for sure.”
The Bearkats look to regroup this week and prepare for an Alabama State team that will be playing in its season opener.
“We learned some valuable lessons at Eastern Washington,” Keeler said. “I'm just hoping now that we grow from them.”
Alabama State and Sam Houston are meeting on the gridiron for the first time in the two program's history. The Hornets from Montgomery, Alabama, are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
Head coach Reggie Barlow directed Alabama State to an 8-4 record in 2013. The Hornets were the runners-up the the SWAC East Division with a 7-2 league mark.
Sam Houston owns a 14-7 record against teams from the SWAC. The Bearkats are 10-5 versus Texas Southern, 2-0 against Mississippi Valley State, 2-1 with Alcorn State and 0-1 versus Prairie View.
