Kats top Prairie View 2-1

The Bearkat soccer team needed some late heroics to pick up the team's first win of the season, 2-1, over Prairie View A&M Sunday at Pritchett Field. Junior Mariah Titus buried a penalty kick in the 89th minute to lead Sam Houston to victory.

The two teams played a physical, yet sloppy first half which saw a combined 12 fouls and seven combined offsides decisions.

Junior midfielder Shelby McDaniel scored a very well-taken goal to open the scoring in the 77th minute. Sophomore forward Maddy Panozzo made a great run down the right wing and slotted the ball to McDaniel who turned and fired with her left foot into the back of the net.

Prairie View was able to equalize less than two minutes later. A corner kick was taken short and whipped into the box. Defender Reina Mata appeared to get the final touch as the ball dribbled past goalkeeper Magen Ross at the near post.

The Bearkats piled on the pressure late in the match and were rewarded with a penalty decision with about 90 seconds remaining. Titus blasted it past the goalkeeper who was left standing still.

Sam Houston will next head to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech Friday at 7 p.m.
