Shelby Genung of Sam Houston was named to the all-tournament team at the Flo Hyman Cup tournament hosted by the University of Houston this weekend.
The honor marked the second time in three events this fall that the sophomore middle blocker from Sugar Land has been named all-tournament.
Friday and Saturday in Houston, Genung totaled 29 kills in 63 attempts for a .302 hitting percentage. She posted a career best 17 kills in the Bearkats five-set victory over Oral Roberts Friday.
The Bearkats came from two sets to one down to earn the win. Down by one point, 13-12, in the fifth and decisive set, a kill by Genung set up match point in the 13-25 25-23 20-25 27-25 16-14 victory.
Sam Houston came close to pulling off another amazing comeback in the Kats' final match of the tournament. The host UH Cougars won the first two sets against SHSU, but the Bearkats rallied to win the third and fourth stanzas to force another fifth set showdown. Houston finally prevailed in a nail-biter, winning the match 16-14 in the final set.
For the season, Genung is the Bearkats' second-leading scorer with 92 points in 10 matches. Her point total includes 69 kills, 10 service aces, and 25 total blocks. She leads the team in blocks.
Sam Houston concludes the non-conference portion of its 2014 season this weekend with a trip to Fort Worth to take on TCU, High Point and Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the Horned Frog Molten Invitational hosted by TCU. The SHSU women own a 6-4 record heading into the event.
The Bearkat volleyball team opens Southland Conference play the next week. The team's first three league matches will be on the road as they travel to Lamar Saturday, Sept 27; Nicholls Thursday, Oct. 2 and McNeese State Saturday, Oct. 4.
Next home match for the Sam Houston volleyball team is Thursday, Oct. 9, when SHSU plays host to Incarnate Word at 6:30 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
