Carling Urben, a junior from Jarrell, Texas, became the fourth Sam Houston volleyball player to earn all-tournament honors in a Bearkat event this fall.
Urben was one of seven players named all-tournament at the TCU Molten Invitational. The Bearkats lost in four sets to host TCU, dropped a heart-breaker in a two-and-a-half hour five set battle with High Point and defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff in three sets in the event in Fort Worth Friday and Saturday.
The middle blocker ranked second for the Bearkats in kills with 29 in the three matches. She led the team with 10 blocks including three solos and seven assists. For the season, Urben ranks fourth on the squad with 61 kills.
TCU won the tournament with three victories. High Point was second, Sam Houston third and Arkansas-Pine Bluff fourth. Other members of the all-tournament team were Ashley Smith, Stephanie Holland and Regan McGuire of TCU, Haley Barnes and Wavie Chin from High Point and Lauren Corby from UAPB.
Senior outside hitter Deveney Wells-Gibson has been named all-tournament twice this year. She was voted the “Most Valuable Player” after SHSU won the Bearkat Classic to open the season and received all-tournament recognition in the Pioneer Classic in Denver.
Setter Michelle Griffith and middle blocker Shelby Genung also both were all-tournament selections in the Sam Houston event. Genung repeated as an all-tournament selection at the University of Houston Cougar Classic.
Sam Houston completed non-conference tournament action with a 7-6 record. The seven victories represent the most by Bearkat volleyball team before their Southland Conference opener since 1994.
The Kats travel to Beaumont to face Lamar Saturday at 1 p.m. in their 2014 league opener. The next home match for the Sam Houston volleyball team is Thursday, Oct. 9, against Incarnate Word at 6:30 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum
