
Volleyball challenges top teams in Denver

The Sam Houston women's volleyball team returns to action Friday and Saturday competing at the University of Denver Pioneer Classic.
Denver plays host to Kansas, Bradley and the Bearkats. Sam Houston and the Pioneers both enter the event with perfect records.
The Kats are 4-0 with victories over California State-Bakersfield, Misssippi State, Louisiana-Monroe and Texas-Pan American.
Senior Deveney Wells-Gibson not only won tournament “Most Valuable Player” honors in last week's SHSU Invitational. She also was Southland Conference “Player of the Week.” The outside hitter totaled 79 kills in the tournament.
Denver is 3-0 after winning the Maverick Classic in Arlington last weekend. The Pioneers defeated Jackson State, Incarnate Word and Texas-Arlington
Moni Corrujeco is Denver's top offensive threat with 44 kills in the team's first three matches.
Bradley is 0-3 coming into the tournament, but two of the losses were in five sets and the third was in four. Outside hitter Jessie Tulacka leads the team.
After a 2-1 start to their season, Kansas travels to Denver after achieving the program's milestone 700th victory in the program's 40 seasons. The Jayhawks are slated to finish second in the Big 12 conference, and look to repeat their success of 2013 which saw them advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Senior OH Sara McClinton brought home Tournament MVP honors after racking up 40 kills during the Kansas Invitational Tournament.
Sam Houston plays Denver Friday night at 7 p.m. On Saturday the Kats take on Kansas at 10 a.m. and Bradley at 5 p.m.
The Denver Pioneer Classic is the first of three weekend road trips to intercollegiate tournaments.
