Women fall 67-64 to Nicholls Thursday

Despite a career best 31 points by junior guard Shernise Robertson, the Sam Houston State women's basketball team suffered another close loss on the road as the Bearkats fell to Nicholls 67-64 in Thibodaux, La., Thursday.

Robertson went 10-of-21 from the field including four three pointers on her record night. Taylor Dorsey added 13 points and Saundra Guillory added 10 points and eight rebounds to the Bearkat cause.

Ekiya Gray and Jenny Nash led the Colonels with 15 points each. Nicholls ups its season record to 7-8 and stands 3-1 in Southland play. The SHSU women fell to 3-12 for the year and 2-3 in league action.

Nicholls led for most of the game, jumping out to a 13-2 lead in the first three minutes. The Colonels' biggest lead was 13 points, 22-9, with 10:03 left in the opening half. But the Bearkats bounced back, closing the period with a 19-11 run to trail only 33-28 at intermission.

The Kats' run continued in the second half as the SHSU women scored eight unanswered points to go up 36-33 on a Guillory layup at the 17:39 mark. The lead was short-lived as Nicholls jumped back in front. Sam Houston tied the game four times, the last with 5:28 to play, 57-57.

Two free throws by Robertson pulled Sam Houston within one point, 65-64, with 12 seconds to play. Gray sank two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to ice the victory.

One week ago, Sam Houston lost to Southeastern Louisiana 65-63 in Hammond after tying the game with 12 seconds remaining only fall on a buzzer beater by the Lions.

The Bearkats return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Sam Houston women play host to McNeese State at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
