Two teams needing victories to keep pace in the 2015 Southland Conference women's basketball race meet Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Abilene.
Sam Houston, 3-13 for the year and 2-4 in Southland action, has fallen by margins of only two, three and five points in its last three Southland losses.
Abilene Christian, 8-7 overall and 1-4 in the league, is looking to bounce back from its recent overtime defeat by defending regular season Southland Conference champions Stephen F. Austin. Thursday's game will be played at Moody Coliseum.
Sam Houston and Abilene Christian are meeting for the 13th time in the pair's women's basketball histories. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 7-5 following last year's 73-67 win in Abilene.
ACU led by three against SFA at halftime and as many as seven points during the second half, but Porsha Roberts totaled 25 points to lead the Jacks as they rallied to clip ACU in OT, 71-69, Saturday..
Sam Houston started conference play with a 59-55 win vs. Incarnate Word but since have fallen to Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls and McNeese, which topped the Bearkats Saturday in Huntsville, 79-74.
Because of injuries, the Bearkats have started two transfers, two sophomores and a true freshman for most of the season. Shernise Robertson, a transfer guard from Tyler, leads Sam Houston in scoring with 17.4 points per game, while sophomore Taylor Dorsey is averaging 12.8 ppg.
The Bearkats' inside game is being handled by six-foot-three-inch transfer Shadijah Moore and freshman Saundra Guillory, each of whom are averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.
Following Thursday's action in Abilene, the SHSU women will return to Huntsville to play host to Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. Saturday in the opening tilt in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
