Box Score Sam Houston State soccer created opportunities but could not execute at key moments, notching a scoreless tie over two overtimes against Southeastern Louisiana Friday night from Pritchett Field in the squad's first home match since Sept. 27.
“I thought from comparing what we did last Friday night, we got in and battled and had some good opportunities but weren't able to get them finished,” eighth-year head coach Tom Brown said. “I hate to drop some points here at home but it's still positive that we didn't lose and got a shutout.”
The shutout was the fifth on the season for the stingy Bearkat (7-5-2 overall, 4-2-1 Southland) defense and came against a Lions (9-3-2 overall, 4-2-1 SLC) offense that entered the match first in the league in goals per game (2.85). In the net, Sam Houston senior keeper Kylie Hambleton recorded eight saves.
“The effort and intensity were better,” Brown said. “If we have that every day we give ourselves a chance to win. I have to be pleased at it from that standpoint. We struggled in the final third so hopefully that will work itself out quickly.”
Offensively, Sam Houston took 14 shots, including five on goal, with one each from Allie Johnson, Mariah Titus, Shelby McDaniel, Lexi Riggs and Lindsey Bienski. Johnson posted a team-leading four shots followed by Madison Cannon and McDaniel's two.
“I think our attack was good and we possessed the ball a lot,” McDaniel said. “It's that last shot and goal. We're hoping things will come together. We know if we play our game, we can beat anybody.”
Sam Houston returns to play from Pritchett on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Nicholls. For the latest, follow @SHSUSoccer on Twitter and visit GoBearkats.com.
