Kats notch conference wins, classroom success

From the Pitch
We are about half way through the conference schedule and are 4-1 at this point. That puts us in a tie for second place with Houston Baptist and one point behind Stephen F. Austin. This last weekend was a huge boost for the team getting two close wins on the road at McNeese State and Lamar. Both of those teams put us under tremendous pressure. I thought the team showed a lot of composure, after giving up a late goal against McNeese State, to fight back in overtime for the game winner. Madison Cannon, a transfer from Central Florida, netted the goal. She had put a shot against the crossbar earlier in the game that Allie Johnson scored to give us a lead.
The team is taking a couple days off from training to recover physically and mentally from the weekend and the first part of conference play. Several players have played lots of minutes and they need a break for their bodies. With midterms coming up, players are also beginning to stress about those tests and are putting in more time to maintain their grades. A couple of weeks ago, the team received their eighth straight academic award from the NSCAA. It recognizes teams who maintain better than a 3.0 grade point average over the course of the year. Our team has always been a high achieving team in the classroom. The players we recruit understand that doing their best in the classroom is not just encouraged but expected. We want our players to believe that excelling on the field and in the classroom is preparing them to excel in life.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we will be working on a couple aspects of our game to get ready for the road trip to Northwestern State. We have three home games and three roads left in the season. We feel that our best soccer is yet to be played.
