Box Score Led by Jordyn Vaughn with 21 kills, Sam Houston made 2015 Southland Conference regular season champion A&M-Corpus Christi work hard to maintain their perfect league record.
The Bearkats took a two set to one lead but the Islanders rallied for a 25-14 20-25 24-26 25-19 15-8 five-set win. The victory ups their season mark to 27-4 and their conference record to 15-0.
Shelby Genung added 13 kills and Taylor Cunningham had 10 as Sam Houston out-scored the Islanders 70 kills to 59. Errors hurt the Kats as Sam Houston totaled 34 attack miscues in their 197 attempts while A&M-Corpus Christi had only 11 in 172 tries.
Ivy Baresh and Morgan Carlson each had 15 kills to lead the Islanders. Sam Houston drops to 12-17 for the season and 6-9 in league action.
Michelle Griffith assisted on 57 kills. Claire Kilpatrick had 24 digs and Breanna Homer added 21.
After a 4-4 tie to open the match, the Islanders went on a 10-5 run to pull away 14-9. The Kats never came closer than six points the rest of the way as A&M-Corpus Christi took the first frame 25-14.
The second stanza was a different tune with the Bearkats taking control after a third tie at 11-11. A service ace by Breanna Homer gave Sam Houston a lead they never relinquished. The Islanders pulled to within one point, 16-15 but consecutive kills by Cunningham, Madison Wallace and Homer sparked a 8-5 run to event the match at a set apiece.
The third set was a battle with 12 ties and five lead changes. Sam Houston had set point at 24-20 after a kill by Wallace. The Islanders rallied to knot the third at 24-24. Another kill by Wallace and an error by the Islanders but the Kats up two sets to one.
In the fourth set the Islanders jumped out to a 17-9 lead and controlled the contest the rest of the way. The Bearkats held an early lead in the final stanza but the Islanders did not commit a single error in the set while totaling eight kills to finally earn the win.
Sam Houston completes the regular season Saturday with a 2 p.m. match with Houston Baptist.
