Kats close regular season with 3-1 win vs. HBU

In a pivotal match to determine seeding in next week's Southland Conference volleyball tournament, Sam Houston State was firing on all cylinders, downing Houston Baptist 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14) in the regular-season finale thanks to a season-high 22 kills from Brooke White.
After the Huskies' evened play at one set a piece heading to the intermission, Sam Houston clamped down, running away with 25-17 and 25-14 wins in the final sets.
The double-digit kill mark was the 18th of the season for White and the first since posting 15 against Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 22. Meanwhile, added her fourth straight double-digit kill match, finishing with 14 while adding 13 digs.
Michelle Griffith helped power the offense, adding 46 assists. Defensively, the junior added 10 digs, while Breanna Homer posted 16 digs and Claire Kilpatrick added a team-leading 18. HBU was led by Jessica Wooten's 14 kills and Kayla Aemer's 32 assists.
At the service line, the Bearkats added 10 aces including three a piece from Homer and White. Kilpatrick also got into the action with two while Shelby Genung and Amanda Gooch posted one. The result was the team's league high and most since posting as many against UTSA on Aug. 29.
While the Bearkats had already clinched a spot in the upcoming league tournament (Nov. 20-22 at Central Arkansas), the result adds to a tightly-grip back half of contenders as New Orleans and Houston Baptist each entered the day at 7-8 while Southeastern Louisiana sat at 7-9.
