When Sam Houston State men's basketball tips off its home slate on Tuesday evening, it will also mark the beginning of the promotional schedule, with football season ticket holders receiving free admission with their voucher to the 6:30 p.m. game against St. Thomas.
Several promotions will be season long including kids being admitted free on Saturday, the Cane's Challenge (fans receive a coupon for a buy one, get one free box combo when the men score 70 points or more and the women score 60 plus) and the 3 Spoons 3 Point Challenge (when Sam Houston makes 10 three-pointers during a home game, everyone wins free 3 Spoons).
The season will also feature six theme nights including Celebrity Night on Tuesday, where prizes will be up for grabs for those dressed up as their favorite celebrity. Others include a canned food drive for 'Thanksgiving Night' (Nov. 23), 80s Night (Nov. 29), Star Wars Day (Dec. 6), Sammy's birthday (Dec. 14) and Disney Night (Dec. 17).
Saturday's men's basketball game against Southern Illinois (1 p.m.) will be the first 'Grow the Growl' game with the first 500 students will receive a free rally towel. When the women take on Abilene Christian on Jan. 21, free foam fingers will be given away while the Feb. 20 doubleheader will have free Grow the Growl long sleeve t-shirts available.
Beginning with the Jan. 21 game, students who attend and swipe their student ID at the four chosen Grow the Growl events will be eligible for a $2,500 scholarship, courtesy of the College of Criminal Justice. The last two days have not yet been selected.
Elsewhere, a year-long Greek competition among the fraternities and sororities will determine who has the most spirit, with the winning organization receiving a $3,000 check. The winner will be determined based on attendance and participation at theme nights.
Sam Houston State would like to thank game sponsors: Brook Place Apartments, Community Service Credit Union, Whataburger, Domino's, HBI Office Solutions, Barefoot, The Grove Apartments, Double Dave's Pizzaworks, Moe's Southwest Grill and Villas on Sycamore Apartments.
