The 2015-16 men's and women's basketball seasons get underway this coming weekend. Today, GoBearkats.com presents the fourth in a series of question and answer sessions with Sam Houston's assistant coaches.
Today's session features women's assistant Rosalind Jennings who is beginning her second year on the Bearkat staff. Before coming to Huntsville, Jennings served as head coach at Alabama Southern Community College.
She was an assistant coach for Sam Houston Brenda Welch-Nichols when both worked at Mercer University. Jennings also served as a head coach at Lander University and Erskine College and was an assistant at Troy State and Paris Junior College.
Jennings played college basketball at Erskine College and later played professionally in the WBL.
Question: How did you get into Coaching?
Coach Jennings: My high school coach did so much for me that it inspired me to want to help kids, like myself. He invented the extra mile when it comes to helping people.
Question: What attracted you to the job here at Sam Houston State University?
Coach Jennings: The opportunity to work with a very dear friend.
Question: What do you look for in a prospect?
Coach Jennings: Everybody looks at athleticism of course, but I think getting kids with great character and work ethic are major factors. If kids have a great basketball IQ that usually translates into a pretty good academic kid. The final factor is if that kid fits into your system and with the players you already have.
Question: What's the best and hardest part of your job?
Coach Jennings: The best part is easy, being a role model for young ladies is a blessing and I'm happy and proud to do that. I love my girls.
The hardest part is recruiting. Times are different now. The means of communicating have increased tremendously. The travel can be grueling and you still might not get the player. So many rules and consequences for breaking those rules can be devastating
Question: What do you like to do when you're away from basketball?
Coach Jennings: Spend time with family, doing nothing but talking, watching TV, eating food, and reminiscing about the old days.
Question: What is your favorite moment so far as a Bearkat Coach so far?
Coach Jennings: Watching Brenda go into the Hall of Honor last year.
Question: What is your favorite professional team?
Coach Jennings: St. Louis Cardinals
Question: What is your favorite quote?
Coach Jennings: “The time is always right to do what is right” – Martin Luther King
Coach Jennings and the Bearkat women open their 2015-16 schedule Friday at TCU. The squad's first home game is Friday, November 20, when Sam Houston plays host to Our Lady of the Lake in the annual "Pack the House Game" at 11 a.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
