Bearkat men roll over LeTourneau 96-54

Junior center Aurimas Majauskas posted a season best 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead Sam Houston to a 96-54 non-conference men's basketball victory over LeTourneau Tuesday night.

Four other Bearkats scored in double figures with Jovante' Spivey and Albert Almanza each scoring 15 points and Andre Sands added 10. The Sam men out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 51-32 and out-scored LeTourneau 48-6 in the paint.

“I was really pleased with the defensive intensity, especially at the beginning of the game,” Sam Houston head coach Jason Hooten said. “That's really where we need to improve. Obviously with a much bigger team, we wanted get the ball inside and make them guard our big men. Aurimas had a good night.”

Jeff Martin and Giovanny Thompson each scored 11 points to lead the Yellow Jackets in scoring. Sam Houston upped its record to 4-5 for the year while LeTourneau fell to 3-7.

The game marked the final non-conference home game for the Bearkats who embark this weekend on a long road swing that will take them to face LIU-Brooklyn in New York and UC-Irvine in the first round of the Sun Bowl Classic next week.

“We've played a really challenging schedule,” Hooten said. “I looked today at our RPI and, at 3-5, we were number 96. That really demonstrates our strength of schedule. But that's how we're going to get better and get ready for Southland Conference play.”

Sam Houston shot 48.7 per cent from the floor (37-of-76). The Kats opened strong with 52.5 percent shooting in the first half. The Bearkats collected 28 points from the Yellow Jackets 17 turnovers.
