Sam Houston State senior Shernise Robertson totaled 19 points, none bigger than the game-winning jumper with four seconds remaining to lift the Bearkats to a 53-51 win at Texas Southern on Monday night from HPE Arena.
Robertson, a guard from Cypress, has scored in double-digits in six of the squad's seven games, one season after leading the Southland Conference with 19.7 points per game.
The Bearkats (4-3), who have won four of their last five, faced a seven-point deficit entering the fourth quarter and 12-point climb with 9:20 to go after Texas Southern (1-6) scored the first five points of the frame.
Over the next six minutes, however, Sam Houston clamped down defensively, allowing just one Tigers' free throw while the Bearkats went on a 9-1 run including Robertson free throws to cut the TSU lead to two at 44-42 with 3:13 remaining.
With 1:56 left, Texas Southern had built its lead to six on a pair of free throws from Toni Cheadle, who tallied 10 points, but it was the beginning of the end for the Tigers, who could not stop the Kats down the stretch.
Senior Angela Beadle, who notched 10 points and 13 of Sam Houston's 44 rebounds, pulled down a missed jumper with 1:11 left and freshman Kamry Orr found Robertson from behind the arch to cut the lead to 51-49 with 55 seconds left.
On the ensuing trip down the court, Orr came away with one of her five steals, grabbing it away from Brianna Sidney, leading to freshman Laurynn McGowen's game-tying jumper with 37 seconds left.
Following Robertson's heroics, Texas Southern's Jazzmin Parker could not hit a three-pointer, as Sam Houston recovered from 21.4 percent shooting in the first two frames for the non-conference victory.
Sam Houston returns home Thursday to face Rice on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be the final at Johnson Coliseum of the year, with the Kats starting a four-game road trip on Saturday and not returning until Jan. 7 against Southeastern Louisiana.
