This fall, Athletics, the College of Criminal Justice and several other departments on campus teamed up to launch the Grow the Growl student attendance initiative. By attending four select athletic events in during the semester, students would become eligible for a $2,500 scholarship courtesy of the College of Criminal Justice.
The first Grow the Growl event, which was sponsored by SHSU Greek Life, took place on Sept. 15 when Sam Houston State volleyball took on Texas State. That night, 1,013 students showed up to support the Bearkats, the largest student crowd at volleyball in over six years.
After the final event of the semester, men's basketball vs. Southern Illinois on Nov. 21, the students eligible for the grand prize were placed into a random drawing. The drawing was conducted the week after Thanksgiving. The winner of the first Grow the Growl attendance initiative is Chelsea Page, a junior from Houston.
Grow the Growl returns on Jan. 21 at women's basketball, and another random drawing for a $2,500 scholarship will be conducted at the end of the semester. The dates and times of the four Grow the Growl dates are:
-Thursday, January 21 @ 6:30 p.m. – women's basketball vs. Abilene Christian (sponsored by Mass. Comm.)
-Saturday, February 20 @ 2:00 p.m./4:30 p.m. – basketball DH vs. Central Arkansas (sponsored by Rec. Sports, Student Money Management Center, Bearkat OneCard)
