
Women Face Big 12 Power K State Saturday Night

The Sam Houston women's basketball team will test themselves against two of the top programs in the nation in the next two weekends.
The Bearkats take on Kansas State in Manhattan, Kansas, Saturday night. Eight days later, after the Christmas break, the Sam women travel to Austin to face the Texas Longhorns. The two Big 12 Conference powers own a combined 17-1 record. Kansas State stands 8-1 after posting its fifth consecutive victory with a 102-53 win over Florida Atlantic Dec. 13. The Longhorns are one of three unbeaten Big 12 women's teams with a perfect 9-0 record.
Sam Houston heads north to Kansas with a 4-4 mark after a 58-46 loss to Rice at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum Thursday night. Senior center Angela Beadle led the Kats with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Shernise Robertson added 10 points.
Robertson and Beadle are the Bearkats' two top scorers. Robertson is averaging 15.6 points per game. She has scored in double figures in seven of Sam Houston's eight games this year with a season best of 22 points in the victory over LSU-Alexandria. Beadle owns a 12.5 scoring mean and a team-leading 9.1 rebounds per contest. She has posted double figure points in each contest this year and double digit rebounds four times.
Newcomers Laurynn McGowen and Kamry Orr add 9.1 and 6.1 points per game respectively for the Bearkats.
K-State was paced in their last victory by the group of junior guard Kindred Wesemann, junior center Breanna Lewis, senior guard Antoinette Taylor and senior guard Megan Deines. Wesemann scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Lewis tallied 14 points and seven rebounds. Taylor registered a career-high 14 points off the bench with Deines adding 11 points and four rebounds.
For the season, K-State has three players averaging double figures led by Lewis with 15.2 points and 7.0 rebounds. In the last three games, Lewis is averaging 16.7 points on a .595 field goal percentage and 8.0 rebounds. Wesemann is averaging to 13.6 points and 3.7 assists this season and Deines is averaging 11.3 points and 2.5 rebounds.

The contests at Kansas State and Texas wrap up the Bearkats' non-conference schedule. Sam Houston opens Southland Conference action on the road on Saturday, January 2, in San Antonio against Incarnate Word. The Sam women's first home Southland game at Johnson Coliseum will be Thursday, January 7, when the Kats play host to Southeastern Louisiana.
