Kats fall 63-50 to Islanders

Sam Houston was doomed by a slow start as they fell 63-50 to A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum. The loss drops the Bearkats to 5-6 in Southland play while the Islanders improve to 7-4 in the league.

Junior guard Shernise Robertson had her streak of games scoring 20 or more points snapped. She finished with 18 points, three rebounds and two assists. The league's leading scorer had put up more than 20 in seven consecutive games.

Sam Houston made just one basket in the first seven minutes of the ballgame, a layup by Taylor Dorsey. While the Bearkats struggled shooting the ball, the Islanders managed to hit 5-of-7 three-pointers in the first half.

The Kats shot just 18% from the field through the first 20 minutes and trailed by as many as 18 points. The shooting percentage was the worst in any half by the Kats this season. Despite the poor shooting SHSU only trailed 28-16 at halftime.

The second half started with a 10-2 Bearkat run to cut A&M-Corpus Christi's lead to 30-26. The four-point margin was the closest the game had been since the opening minutes of the contest.

After the Kats great run to start the second half, the Islanders jumped back ahead in a big way with an 18-5 run to grow the lead to 48-31.

A&M-Corpus would maintain at least a 10-point lead for the remainder of the ballgame.

Three Islanders players scored in double figures, led by 16 points from Shay Weaver. Camesha Davis added 14 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Olivia Fouty also scored 14 points.

The Bearkats' five-game home stand will end Thursday when they host Abilene Christian at 6:30 p.m.
