Spring practice begins Monday morning

With only two senior starters gone from a squad that rolled up an 11-5 record last fall on the way to a Southland Conference championship and the program's third FCS playoff semifinals appearance in four years, excitement couldn't be much higher at Sam Houston State.
The defense of the conference crown and the Bearkats' efforts to earn a fifth consecutive post-season playoff berth begin Monday as 2015 spring football begins.
The Bearkats will hold 14 practices leading up to the annual Orange-White spring game to be held Friday, April 10 at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
Head coach K. C. Keeler and his staff return 57 lettermen plus several outstanding red-shirts and newcomers.
“It's exciting that we get a chance to get out there Monday,” SHSU head coach K. C . Keeler said. “We've had a great winter. We've gotten great results from our testing and conditioning programs. There's a great difference from a year ago.”
Workouts begin Monday at 8 a.m. The Bearkats will practice on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday for the next four weeks.
“We want to spend the first two weeks working on basics and fundamentals,” Keeler said. “We are looking to eliminate mistakes. We have good players. We need to play clean. We need to see their fundamentals.”
This spring is a total reverse of last year's March and April practices. Keeler and his staff have a better idea of the team's strengths and weaknesses after a full season together.
“We've got a lot better feel that last year,” Keeler said. “Last season, we simplified a lot of things. We didn't have the experience and we wanted to maximize our talent level. Now, we can go and hone in on how we want to do it.”
