Sam Houston State and Baylor will step out of conference play for a midweek series starting at Don Sanders Stadium Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The two teams will then meet at Baylor Ballpark Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Prior to Tuesday's game is the “Bearkat Country Crawfish Boil.” Bowers Boulevard next to Don Sanders Stadium will be shut down for a block party and tailgate event.
Free crawfish will be provided for the first 400 students (with an active Black Bearkat One Card) and will be sold for $10 per person for faculty, staff and alumni. The event will also have a live performance by The StringBenders.
The party ends at 6:00 p.m. so that fans can head into the stadium to help cheer on the Bearkats.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS:
TUESDAY: RHP Seth Holbert (1-0, 5.14 ERA) vs. RHP Theron Kay (2-1, 4.02 ERA)
WEDNESDAY: TBA vs. TBA
Sam Houston is 9-11 after winning the final game of the series against Northwestern State. Ryan Brinley made his first start of the season and tossed five scoreless innings to lead the Bearkats to victory over the Demons.
Right fielder Travis Lee has reached base safely in every game this season and has a 24-game reached-base streak dating back to last year. He leads the team in several offensive categories. Lee is batting .403 with 31 hits, 18 runs scored and five stolen bases.
Seth Holbert is slated to make his first career start. The longest outing of his career came in the NCAA Regional last season, when he tossed 3 1/3 of relief in the win over Siena. He also has a three-inning relief effort against Wichita State this year.
Baylor opened the season with a sweep of No. 13 Cal Poly and jumped into the national rankings for a few weeks themselves. After starting the season 6-2 in eight home games, the Bears lost 10 straight road or neutral site games and have a 6-12 record coming into Tuesday.
The Bears are batting just .244 as a team and the pitching staff has compiled a 5.55 earned run average. The projected starter Theron Kay has a 2-1 record with a 4.02 ERA in three starts.
SHSU is back at Don Sanders Stadium this weekend to host Nicholls State. The Colonels are 10-7-1 overall this season and sit 3-3 in league play with a series win over Abilene Christian and a series loss to A&M-Corpus Christi.
