Adams hits grand slam in doubleheader loss

A grand slam home run by Hillary Adams highlighted play for Sam Houston as the SHSU softball team fell 8-2 and 6-4 in a Southland Conference doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond.

Adams accounted for all four runs in the second game with the 36th homer of her career. Adams is the Bearkats' all-time leader in both home runs and runs batted in (126). Friday's homer scored Tiffany Castillo and Dani Allen who both reached on singles and pinch runner Hannah Marino.

Southeastern Louisiana upped its season record to 15-17 with the doubleheader sweep. The Lions stand 10-1 in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston dropped to 8-22 for the year and 1-10 in league play.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to a three-run lead as the Lions' Teresa Lemos doubled with the bases loaded after three consecutive walks.

Sam Houston cut the margin to one run as third baseman Peyton Webb and right fielder Jennie Kieval hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. But the Lions exploded for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth.

Taylor Bishop was the winning pitcher, spreading five hits over seven innings. Meme Quinn took the loss for Sam Houston. Taylor Atkinson pitched in relief.

In the second game, the Lions scored six runs on 10 hits including three doubles. SLU exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning. With Adams' grand slam in the top of the fourth, the Kats pulled back to within a run. Southeastern Louisiana added an insurance tally in the bottom of the sixth.

The two teams will play the third and final game of the Southland Conference series Saturday 11 a.m. The Kats will return home to the Softball Complex for their next league weekend series when the SHSU women play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday and Saturday, April 3-4.
