Beaumont – Despite 22 points by junior guard Shernise Robertson, the Sam Houston women's basketball team fell 92-73 Thursday at the Montagne Center.
Taylor Dorsey and Morghen Day each added 13 points for the Bearkat women. Addesha Collins led Lamar with 18 points.
The SHSU women were 9-of-18 from three point range with Robertson hitting four treys and Dorsey and Day three each.
The loss dropped Sam Houston to 6-21 for the year and 5-12 in Southland play. But, thanks to Houston Baptist's 73-48 loss to A&M-Corpus Christi, the Bearkat women still have a chance to qualify as the eighth seed in the Southland Conference tournament that begins in Katy in one week.
Sam Houston's only lead came on a Taylor Dorsey three-point basket in the fifth minute of the contest to put the Bearkats up 8-7.
The Cardinals bounced back with a 19-5 run to go up 26-13 on a layup by Baileigh O'dell after a steal. Two three-pointers by Robertson and a trey by Dorsey fueled a 13-4 run by the Kats to cut the margin to 30-6 with 4:43 remaining. Again Lamar pulled away to take a 39-29 lead into the locker room at intermission.
A lay-up by Dorsey two-and-a-half minutes into the second half pulled Sam Houston to within six points, 42-36. But Lamar again surged ahead, eventually building a 70-50 lead with 9:08 to play.
The Sam Houston women complete the regular season Saturday with a 4 p.m. contest at Stephen F. Austin.
