Center fielder Jessica Slater and second baseman Dani Allen each posted a pair of hits in a 4-3 loss by Sam Houston to Incarnate Word in the finale of a three-game Southland Conference softball series in San Antonio Saturday afternoon.
Cardinal pitcher Brooke Dubois limited the Kats to five hits. Third baseman Peyton Webb picked up the other single for Sam Houston.
UIW never trailed, scoring two runs each in the second and fourth innings. The Cardinals totaled eight hits and took advantage of three Bearkat errors.
Slater scored Sam Houston's first two runs. In the third inning, the senior reached first on a fielder's choice then advanced to third on a wild pitch and a single by Allen. She scored on a ground out by catcher Tiffany Castillo to cut the UIW margin to 2-1.
In the fifth inning, Slater doubled and scored on a single by Allen to again pull Sam Houston to 4-2.
Meme Quinn, running for designated player Hillary Adams who reached on an error, scored the final tally for the Kats on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Hannah Marino.
Tayler Atkinson (3-8) was the losing pitcher for Sam Houston. The Bearkats fall to 17-26 for the year and 8-14 in conference play.
Following a mid-week non-conference game at Texas Southern, the softball team will host Stephen F. Austin next Friday and Saturday in the final three games of the 2015 season for Sam Houston.
