Men Strike Gold at Rice Track & Field Meet

Both the Sam Houston men's and women's track and field teams posted dominant performances at the J. Fred Duckett Rice Twilight Meet Saturday in Houston.

For the women, Elizabeth Lyssy chalked up her third javelin first place with a throw of 144' 3”, her second-best mark of the spring. Kara Whitson cleared 13' 3” to win the pole vault.

The women's 4x100 relay of Danielle Demas, Elizabeth Ene, Jordan Grady and Paula Smith set a school record to win the event with a time of 45.25.

Danielle Demas also became a three-time winner for the outdoor season with a victory in the 100 meter hurdles, posting a time of 13.35.

Kristine Hanks earned her second gold medal of the season in the shot put with a throw of 48' 2.75”. Ashley Jenkins and Hanks finished first and second in the hammer with throws of 196' 3” and 195' 0”, respectively.

Ruth Amaku won the 400 meter hurdles with a clocking of 59.00. The Bearkat women also won the 4x100 relay with a season best mark of 45.25.

On the men's side, Matt Viverette continued his domination of the 400 meter hurdles. The senior won with a 51.75 clocking to earn his fourth gold medal of the spring in the event.

Rodney Jones won the 400 meter dash with a 46.47 timing, his best of the season. The Bearkat men won the 4x100 relay with a time of 39.95.

Jones ran the third leg on Sam Houston's relay quartet that won the 4x100 in a school-record tying time of 39.95. Simon Imagbe led off followed by Justin Jenkins, Jones and Chris Jefferson. The mark is the 25th fastest time in the nation this year.

Kalvin Singletary won the discus with a throw of 173' 5”. Simon Imagbe was the runner-up in the long jump with a season best 23' 11.75” leap.
