Spring a success for volleyball on & off floor

The Sam Houston volleyball team had an outstanding spring both on the floor and in the community.
The Bearkats hosted two spring tournaments, inviting Texas Southern, Hill College, Navarro College, Lee College, Panola College, and Stephen F. Austin to Johnson Coliseum. The Sam Houston women did not lose a set in either of the two tournaments on their home court to put together impressive perfect 19-0 record at Johnson.
The team also competed in a conference round-robin tournament in Nacogdoches which included teams Lamar, McNeese, and Stephen F. Austin. The Bearkats ended their spring season in Houston at the F.A.S.T. Complex, which hosted powerhouse teams such as Texas, TCU, Baylor University, Rice, and Texas A&M.
The Kats started the day off by sweeping TCU in two straight sets, and with UT-San Antonio and Texas State, and concluded the day with a two set win over Texas Southern.
Off the court, the ladies have volunteered their time as a team within the local community here in Huntsville. The squad visited a Senior Living Community where the girls had the opportunity to visit, read, and played Bingo with residents. The team also visited the Huntsville Boys & Girls Club to play kickball with the children. To conclude the spring season, the ladies picked up trash on our adopted road which is adjacent to the campus here at SHSU.
The volleyball team continued their pursuit of academic successes in the classroom, striving to maintain their team GPA goal of a 3.50; in hopes to surpass last fall's GPA of 3.64. Their strong work ethic transferred into the weight room as each team member made vast improvements and reached new heights in their maxes this week.
“This spring, our volleyball team got progressively better at every tournament in every aspect of the game,” head coach Brenda Gray said. “Defense and ruthless serving continue to be strong points for the Kats. The girls also spent time outside of the gym giving back to our local community. The team ends spring season on a high note and looks forward toward the bright future of the fall season.”
The Bearkats will open its 2015 volleyball campaign by hosting Tulane, UTSA, Montana State and Prairie View A&M on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29, in the annual Sam Houston Invitational tournament.
