Despite missing several players on the defensive side of the ball due to injuries, Sam Houston head coach felt pleased with the second full-contact scrimmage of 2015 Bearkat spring football practice Friday morning at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
Early in the scrimmage, the offense dominated in red zone situations. But the defense rallied to force a trio of three-and-outs in plays from the middle of the field.
“We've only been in full pads twice,” Keeler said of the Bearkats first three weeks of spring work. “It's be design. Every year is different. This is a team that doesn't need all the extra hitting. It's a mature team. We hate to have so many good players on the sidelines defensively, but they're there for smart reasons. We don't want to rush them back.”
Keeler was pleased with the effort on both sides of the ball Friday morning.
“I thought early on the offense did a great job in the red zone. We looked really sharp,” Keeler said. “When we got out in the middle of the field the defense did some pretty good things. They came back to who they are. It's just about competing and trying to get better.”
Sam Houston will wrap up spring ball with the annual Orange-White football scrimmage Friday night at 7 p.m. at Bowers.
“It's going to be a neat day,” Keeler said. “We're going to have the past, the present and the future next Friday. We've had some great success in the past with conference championships and national playoff appearances. Our former lettermen will participate in a special barbeque. Obviously, we have the present in the guys in spring ball and their families coming in. And we will have the future with our entire signing class and their families here as well.”
With three more practices to go, Keeler and his staff continue to emphasize the basics.
“The focus in the last week will be to clean everything up,” Keeler said. “The more they play together the better they will get.”
