Men win at Rice Victor Lopez Classic

Both the Sam Houston State men's and women's track and field teams took the team titles at the 33rd annual Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University in Houston Friday and Saturday.
The Bearkat men totaled 160.5 points to finish 58.5 points ahead of runner-up Rice. The University of Houston was third with 99.5 points. Five other Southland Conference teams (McNeese State, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Incarnate Word and A&M-Corpus Christi) were part of the 20-team field.
Four Bearkat men won their individual events. Rodney Jones took first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.08. Justin Jenkins was the runner-up in the event with a 21.49 mark. Matthew Viverette won the 400 meter hurdles with a clocking of 51.62. William Stark placed third in the event with a 52.66 time. Viverette also placed third in the 110 meter hurdles (14.09).
Both SHSU relays finished as runners-up against top competition. Simon Imagbe, Justin Jenkins, Jones and Demartie Allen teamed for a mark of 40.93 in the 4x100 relay. William Stark, Alex Gilreath, Jeffrey Moore and Jones ran the 4x400 meter relay in 3:11.92.
Michael Nichols won the shot put with a throw of 52' 6.5”. Evan Arambula was first in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a winning mark of 9:14.77.
Other Bearkat top performances included Gilreath with a third place the 400 meters (48.18); Garrett Larson (17' 1.5”) and Garrett Rose (15' 7.75”) placing second and third, respectively in the pole vault and James Endsley (163'0”) and Kalvin Singletary (159' 3”) going two and three in the discus.
